{"id":152,"date":"2021-11-29T17:47:10","date_gmt":"2021-11-29T17:47:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/econyq.com\/news\/?p=152"},"modified":"2021-11-29T17:47:10","modified_gmt":"2021-11-29T17:47:10","slug":"climate-change-behind-collapse-of-advanced-ancient-chinese-civilisation-dubbed-venice-of-the-stone-age","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dev-econyq.com\/news\/climate-change-behind-collapse-of-advanced-ancient-chinese-civilisation-dubbed-venice-of-the-stone-age\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate change behind collapse of advanced ancient Chinese civilisation dubbed \u2018Venice of the Stone Age\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cMassive flooding\u201d triggered by sudden intense monsoon rains led to the collapse of the Liangzhu and other\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/stone-age\">stone age<\/a>\u00a0Chinese cultures along the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/yangtze-river\">Yangtze river<\/a>\u00a0delta around 4,300 years ago, a new study has suggested.<\/p>\n<p>The Liangzhu exploration site, about 160km southwest of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/shanghai\">Shanghai<\/a>, was home to an advanced ancient city with an elaborate water management system, and the oldest known use of large hydraulic engineering structures in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/china\">China<\/a>, the researchers, including those from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-im-prompt\"><\/div>\n<p>Previous\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/114\/52\/13637\" rel=\"nofollow\">archaeological studies<\/a>\u00a0have shown that this walled city had a system of navigable canals, dams, and water reservoirs, which made it possible to cultivate large agricultural areas throughout the year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-cWhChR cUzChL desktop-only teads\">\n<div class=\"sc-bmzQIS hDpZZE\">\n<div class=\"sc-cHaCKK iWOWeF\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Liangzhu ancient city, declared a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/1592\" rel=\"nofollow\">Unesco World Heritage Site in 2019<\/a>, is one of the first examples of highly developed communities based on water infrastructure in the history of human civilisation.<\/p>\n<p>The city\u2019s ruins also show evidence that it was culturally and technologically advanced for the period, particularly in agriculture and aquaculture.
